Another positive result at Bushnell prison housing 12% of COVID-19 state inmates

A 16th staff member has tested positive for COVID-19 at a Bushnell prison that also houses 12 percent of the inmates in state correctional facilities suffering from the potentially deadly virus.

A total of 101 inmates at the Sumter Correctional Institution in Bushnell have been identified with Coronavirus. Three prisoners also in medical isolation and another 910 have been placed in medical quarantine at the facility that’s overseen by The GEO Group Inc.

All told, 208 staff members and 843 inmates at 57 Florida state prisons have tested positive for COVID-19. Twelve inmates are in medical isolation and 6,042 are in medical quarantine. A total of 3,876 inmates have tested negative for the virus and 1,673 are awaiting results.

Only three other state correctional facilities have more inmates suffering from COVID-19 than the Bushnell facility. Those are:

  • Liberty Correctional Institution in Bristol (191);
  • Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach; and
  • Hamilton Correctional Institution in Jasper (112).

Only two state prisons have more staff members identified with the virus. Those are:

  • Tomoka Correctional Institution (20); and
  • South Bay Correctional Institution (48).
