Seven new cases of COVID-19 reported at rehab facility near The Villages

An outbreak of the Coronavirus was reported Wednesday at a nursing home just outside the boundaries of The Villages.

Seven new cases of the potentially deadly virus were identified at The Villages Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, located at 900 County Road 466 in Lady Lake. Those all were reported as residents, two of whom transferred out of the facility. An employee already had tested positive this week, meaning the facility has seen eight cases of the virus develop within its walls this week alone.

As of Wednesday, the tri-county area was reporting 772 cases of the Coronavirus, an increase of just one in a 24-hour period. Those are comprised of 412 men, 340 women and 20 non-residents. There have been 37 deaths and 150 people have been hospitalized.

Marion County is holding steady at 240 cases. Those are comprised of 102 men, 133 women and five non-residents. There have been five deaths and 31 people have been seen in area hospitals.

It’s unclear if any of the Summerfield cases are in the retirement communities of Del Webb Spruce Creek, Stonecrest or Spruce Creek South, as that specific information isn’t provided by the Florida Department of Health.

Sumter County is now reporting 253 cases among 180 men, 72 women and one non-resident. There have been 17 deaths and 44 people have required some form of hospital care.

Of the Sumter County cases, 121 are in Bushnell, with all but one of those apparently being at the Sumter Correctional Institution (104 inmates and 16 staff members). Another 62 are being reported in The Villages, while other cases have been identified in Lake Panasoffkee (22), Oxford (16), Wildwood (9), Webster (8), Lady Lake portion of the county (6), Sumterville (5) and Coleman (3). The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting seven cases among three inmates and four staff members.

Lake County now has 279 cases among 130 men, 135 women and 14 non-residents. There have been 15 deaths and 75 people have been hospitalized.

The majority of the Lake County cases – 91 – are in Clermont. Another 45 have been reported in Leesburg, 10 in Lady Lake, seven in The Villages portion of the county and five in Fruitland Park. Other Lake County cases have been identified in Eustis (23), Tavares (18), Groveland (17), Mount Dora (16), Mascotte (12), Minneola (6), Sorrento (3), Howey-in-the-Hills (3), Montverde (2), Altoona (2), Okahumpka (1), Umatilla (1), Grand Island (1), Paisley (1) and Yalaha (1).

All told, Florida is reporting 52,634 cases – an increase of just 379 patients in a 24-hour period. Of those, 51,283 are residents. There have been 2,319 deaths and 9,639 people have been treated in hospitals across the Sunshine State.
