Flashlight-swinging Belleview man jailed after scuffle with deputies

Brian Matthew McCarthy

A Belleview man allegedly headbutted two Marion County sheriff’s deputies who were arresting him for swinging a flashlight at a woman.

Brian Matthew McCarthy, 30, was recently charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and two counts of battery on an officer.

McCarthy told the deputies he didn’t want to speak to them and pulled away when one of them tried to detain him. As a second deputy stepped in to help, McCarthy headbutted him in the right shoulder and said, “I will (expletive deleted) you up,” according to the sheriff’s office report.

The deputies took McCarthy to the ground and handcuffed him. While they were placing him in the patrol car, McCarthy headbutted the other deputy in the chest. He was eventually restrained in the back of the car, the report said.

The victim told deputies that McCarthy came home earlier in the night and wasn’t acting like himself. She said he started acting aggressive towards her and was holding a flashlight, and she was in fear. The victim said she started to struggle with McCarthy over the flashlight and was trying to get it out of his hands, according to the report.

The victim said McCarthy swung the flashlight at her and missed, striking the wall next to where she was standing. A deputy observed a hole in the drywall that appeared to be caused by a cylindrical object. The victim said she was so scared of McCarthy that she ran into her bathroom, locked the door and called 911, the report said.

The victim said McCarthy took the flashlight and threw it in the bottom of the pool in the back yard. A deputy found a large metal flashlight, approximately a foot long, at the bottom of the victim’s pool, according to the report.

McCarthy refused to speak to deputies about the incident. He’s being held in the Marion County Jail on $4,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on June 23.
