Arrested Citra woman caught after fleeing hospital

Ashley Amber Colon

A Citra woman who complained of stomach pain while being arrested slipped away from authorities after being taken to the hospital for tests.

Ashley Amber Colon, 26, of 2920 NE 165th Lane, was charged with escape and resisting an officer. She was picked up Saturday at her residence on a warrant for fraudulent use of a credit card, petit theft and violation of her probation for trespassing.

Colon was detained in the back of a patrol car while Marion County sheriff’s deputy confirmed her warrant. Once it was confirmed, Colon started complaining of stomach pain and said she recently had surgery on her stomach. Marion County Fire Rescue responded and took Colon to AdventHealth Ocala ER, located at 1500 SW 1st Ave., according to the sheriff’s office report.

After undergoing several tests, Colon asked to use the bathroom and was granted permission. Once inside, she left through the door on the other side of the bathroom, walked down a hallway and escaped. Hospital staff said they saw her leave through the front doors, ask an elderly couple for a ride and leave the location in a car, the report said.

Colon had been told she was under arrest for her active warrants and would be taken to jail when she was done at the hospital, according to the report.

Another deputy responded to Colon’s residence and saw her in the yard. He told her to stop and she ran off into the woods on foot. Colon was eventually found walking on railroad tracks in the area of the 15700 block of NE Jacksonville Road. She tried to run away again but was caught and placed under arrest, the report said.

Colon is being held in the Marion County Jail on $24,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on June 10 for the probation violation and June 30 for the other charges.
