Admittedly drunk Ocala man doesn’t remember shoving wife into a wall

Charles S. Gernert

An Ocala man said he was drunk and doesn’t remember pushing his wife into a wall during an argument Tuesday night.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that Charles S. Gernert, 56, didn’t eat anything when he got home from work and started drinking right away. She said she tried to go to sleep but Gernert kept coming in and out of the bedroom yelling at her, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said she saw Gernert holding some of her work files in the hallway. She said she took the files from him and went to put them back in her office. The victim said Gernert became irate and pushed her into the wall, causing her to hit her head and drop all the papers on the floor, the report said.

The victim said she ran into her office and locked the door to call 911. She said Gernert started beating the door, knocked it off its hinges, entered the room and yelled at her for being a bad wife. The victim said she was in fear of Gernert hitting her, but he instead went to lie down in bed until law enforcement arrived, according to the report.

After being read his Miranda warning, Gernert said the incident was part of an ongoing issue and he doesn’t remember what happened due to the intoxicating beverages he consumed. He said he does not believe he would hurt the victim, the report said.

Gernert was charged with simple domestic battery and taken to the Marion County Jail. He was released Wednesday on his own recognizance and will appear in Marion County Court on July 8.
