Pilot killed when small plane crashes while landing at Leeward Air Ranch

A pilot was killed Wednesday morning when a small plane crashed at Leeward Air Ranch in Marion County.

Crews from Marion County Fire Rescue and Marion County sheriff’s deputies were called to a fatal plane crash Wednesday morning at Leeward Air Ranch.

Units from Marion County Fire Rescue and Marion County sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash off SE 72nd Avenue after a 911 caller reported that the plane crashed while attempting to land. The caller told 911 dispatchers that he could see the pilot inside the aircraft’s cockpit, a report states.

Marion County firefighters from Belleview Station 18, Spruce Creek Station 30 and Silver Springs Shores Station 17 responded to the crash. A district captain was the first to arrive at 10:38 a.m. and reported the plane had crashed and was upside down.

The pilot, whose identity hadn’t been released, was declared dead at the scene. Firefighters quickly mitigated a fuel leak on the plane and secured it until the wreckage was removed, the report says.

Marion County Fire Rescue then turned the scene over the sheriff’s office. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were called in to investigate the fatal incident.
