Ocklawaha woman accused of hitting man in back of head

Casey Lynn Leverett

An Ocklawaha woman jailed in 2018 for waving a knife at a woman was arrested Sunday after she allegedly struck a man in the back of his head with an unknown object, causing him to bleed.

Casey Lynn Leverett, 20, was charged with simple battery after the incident, which happened at her residence on SE 132nd Place. The victim, who had blood on his hand, showed a Marion County sheriff’s deputy a small laceration on the back of his head.

Leverett told the deputy the victim struck her on the chest. She shifted her infant son to her left hip and showed a red mark below her left clavicle where the baby had been. Leverett said the mark was where the victim struck her, and she said had video of the incident on her cell phone, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The deputy viewed the footage, but it did not substantiate Leverett’s account. The video showed the victim come out of the bedroom, stop and make a half-turn, as if he had just remembered something. It was unclear if physical contact was made during the brief stop, but the deputy observed no aggression coming from the victim, the report said.

The video ended with Leverett starting to react as if she was struck, and the next video started with both parties being separated and a witness calling 911. The witness said Leverett didn’t strike the victim with anything but her open hand, according to the report.

Another witness said she saw Leverett strike the victim on the back of his head and she, too, had video of the incident. The video was taken as the witness was coming out of the bathroom and bringing the phone up to view the incident. The camera starts focusing on the people in the next room. The deputy observed Leverett’s hand returning to her side from the outstretched position and the victim stumbling forward into the kitchen counter, according to the report.

The video shows the witness telling Leverett not to touch the victim, who then yells about being hit and grab a hammer but changes his mind and puts it down. Leverett later admitted she struck the victim when she wasn’t filming but said it was after he hit her in the chest, the report said.

Leverett was taken to the Marion County Jail, where she was released Monday on $500 bond. She is scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on Aug. 4.
