Butcher knife-wielding octogenarian spends a night in jail

Robert John Oakie

An 85-year-old Ocklawaha man spent Thursday night in the Marion County Jail after he allegedly threatened a younger family member with a butcher knife.

Robert John Oakie was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon without intent to kill after the incident, which happened shortly after 6 p.m. at his residence on SE 121st Lane Road.

The victim, who lives with Oakie at the location, told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that he and Oakie were in an argument when Oakie grabbed a butcher knife and threatened to cut off his hands and kill him with it. The victim said he was in fear for his life and locked himself and his girlfriend in his bedroom, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim provided a cell phone video of Oakie in the kitchen following him. The deputy was able to see a silver butcher knife in Oakie’s left hand in the video, the report said.

Oakie told the deputy that he and the victim were arguing and he wants the victim out of the residence. Asked whether anybody was attacked, Oakie said he had a knife and wanted to hit the victim with it but did not. He said he has the knife for protection due to his age. When asked if the victim threatened him, Oakie said, “He said he was going to get me, but I was yelling and didn’t hear too much,” according to the report.

The victim’s girlfriend said she saw the two men fighting. She said she asked Oakie to put down the knife, which he did before law enforcement arrived, the report said.

Oakie was released from jail Friday on his own recognizance and will appear in Marion County Court on Aug. 11.
