Belleview woman admits to stealing phone and giving it to boyfriend

Cheyanne Hailey Cook

A 19-year-old Belleview woman admitted to stealing a cell phone after finding out her boyfriend was about to be arrested for it.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy on Tuesday that his OtterBox-encased black Samsung S20, valued at $1,400, was stolen July 11 and that he believed either Cheyanne Hailey Cook, of 12110 SE 108th Terrace Road, and/or her boyfriend took it while it was charging, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim’s mother said she called the cell phone provider and was able to see a call was made to the Marion County Courthouse and a bail bondsman. She said she believes this was the bondsman for Cook’s boyfriend. The victim’s mother also said she called the number from her husband’s cell phone and Cook answered, the report said.

The deputy spoke with Cook and asked if she knew where the victim’s phone was. She said no, and that she has her own cell phone. The deputy then asked Cook if she would get her boyfriend to be interviewed, and she went into a shed on the north side of the property where she and her boyfriend had been staying. Moments later, Cook and her boyfriend came out of the shed, and Cook said, “We’ll settle it,” while handing the deputy the phone, according to the report.

The deputy asked Cook’s boyfriend why he had the cell phone in his possession and he said Cook allowed him to borrow it. The deputy told Cook’s boyfriend he was going to be detained and started putting him in handcuffs. At that point, Cook spontaneously said, “Are you serious? I’m the one that did this. Can you take me to jail instead?” the report said.

The deputy asked Cook if she took the cell phone and she said yes. She was charged with grand theft of between $300 and $5,000 and taken to the Marion County Jail. She was released Wednesday on $2,000 bond.
