Silver Springs woman caught with drugs during traffic stop

Samantha Ann Carlson

A Silver Springs woman who has been in and out of Marion County Jail numerous times on drug, prostitution and other charges was arrested again last week after she was caught with marijuana while riding in a car pulled over because of a DHSMV clerical error.

Samantha Ann Carlson, 29, of 16900 E. Ft. King St., was charged Thursday with possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana. Jail records show Carlson with eight prior arrests since 2015 on charges including prostitution, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving as a habitual offender, giving a false ID to law enforcement, petit theft, possession of crack cocaine, possession of marijuana, fraudulent use of a credit card and grand theft auto. She most recently was released in May after seven months behind bars.

In the latest incident, Carlson was a passenger in a red Chevy Malibu that a Marion County sheriff’s deputy stopped on East Highway 40 or having a tag that was registered to a red Nissan pickup truck. The driver clarified the tag was accidentally assigned to the truck instead of being transferred to the car, and further research showed it was a DHSMV error. The driver was given a written warning, according to the sheriff’s office report.

A sheriff’s office K9 unit showed up during the traffic stop and the dog, “Duder,” conducted an open-air sniff that alerted to the presence of narcotics on the passenger side. Both occupants were removed and the deputy asked Carlson if there was anything illegal in the car. She said she had marijuana in the console and a crack pipe in her wallet in the passenger door, the report said.

The marijuana and pipe were found in the areas she indicated. The marijuana tested positive for TCH and weighed approximately 30 grams, according to the report.

Carlson was arrested and taken to jail, where she was released later in the day on $2,000 bond. No court information as available.
