Health inspector shuts Ocala eatery after finding multiple rodent droppings

An Ocala restaurant was shut down recently after a health inspector found nine violations – the most egregious of which was rodent droppings throughout the eatery.

A&N Caribbean Cuisine, located at 9339 S.E. Maricamp Rd. in Ocala

The inspector visited A&N Caribbean Cuisine, located at 9339 S.E. Maricamp Rd., on July 29 and reported finding 26 droppings – one on the floor in a closet near the restrooms, six on the floor in a back room, 10 under the front counter, five on a clear dish storage shelf and four behind a stove in the kitchen area, a report on file with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation states.

A second high-priority violation was lodged regarding raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food. Three intermediate violations also were cited – use of an employee handwash sink as an area to drain cans, an accumulation of food residue inside a reach-in cooler and no certified food manager at the restaurant, the report says.

  • Four basic violations also were cited. Those included:
  • Several areas of the ceiling were in disrepair and there were holes in a wall;
  • Several unprotected dishes were stored on a front counter;
  • A grease trap wasn’t installed under a sink and was being serviced; and
  • Chicken was left put on a counter.

The inspector closed the eatery at 1:43 p.m. It was allowed to reopen at 10:30 a.m. the following day after a follow-up inspection, the report says.
