Brooksville man charged with stealing from Ocala Wal-Mart

Joseph Nayak Lane

A Brooksville man was arrested after he reportedly tried to walk out of an Ocala Wal-Mart without scanning and paying for several items.

A security employee at the store, located at 9570 SW Hwy. 200, told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that she witnessed Joseph Nayak Lane, 42, tearing the UPC code off a Spot Roamer LED kit valued at $29.88. She said Lane did not scan the item before placing it in a bag, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The employee said Lane also failed to scan a bottle of flavored coffee creamer valued at $1.23, a break bleeding kit valued at $7.76, and two headlight bulbs valued at $18.88 each. Total value of all the items was $76.63. She said Lane passed all points of sale without paying for the items, the report said.

Lane told the deputy he failed to scan a few things. He was charged with first-degree petit theft and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Friday on $500 bond. No court information was available.
