Fort McCoy man jailed after being found passed out behind wheel of running RV

Frank Lane New

A Fort McCoy man was charged with DUI after being found passed out in his RV with the engine running and in reverse in his driveway.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded Sept 17 to the home of Frank Lane New, 68, of 9515 NE 307th Ave. While approaching the 2004 Ford recreational vehicle bearing a Tennessee license plate, the deputy observed the vehicle was running and was in reverse. The deputy also could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The deputy awakened New and asked how much he had to drink, and he responded, “A lot. I’m on my own property.” The deputy asked him to shut the engine off and get out of the vehicle. New refused to perform in a series of field sobriety exercises, the report said.

New had to use the vehicle to maintain his balance. The odor of alcohol was emitting from his person, his face was flush and his eyes were red and watery. New refused to provide a sample of his breath for testing, according to the report.

New was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released the next day on his own recognizance. He will appear in Marion County Court on Nov. 17.
