Pennsylvania woman caught trying self-checkout scam at Ocala Wal-Mart

Kimberly Christian

A Pennsylvania woman was arrested after being caught on video trying a self-checkout scam at an Ocala Wal-Mart on Wednesday.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded to the store, located at 9570 S.W. Hwy. 200, where a security employee had detained 52-year-old Kimberly Suzanne Christian, of Sellersville, Pa.

The deputy observed surveillance video showing Christian holding a lower priced UPC tag in her left hand, which she used to scan higher-priced merchandise. She can be seen doing this four times during her transaction at register 43, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Christian can then be seen placing the price-switched items into Wal-Mart bags and walking out the grocery exit, passing all points of sale without any attempt to pay the correct price for the items. She was stopped by two store employees, who brought her back to the security office, the report said.

The employees asked Christian for the UPC code used in the switch, and she pulled the $0.79 tag out of her purse. The receipt showed she used it four times for higher-priced merchandise. The total loss for the store was $29.54, according to the report.

After being read her Miranda warning, Christian said it was an accident and offered to pay for the items. However, the security employees asked to pursue charges of retail theft, the report said.

Christian was charged with second-degree petit theft (first offense) and taken to the Marion County Jail, where she was released later Wednesday on $500 bond. No court information was available.
