One more local COVID-19 death as news cases slow to crawl across local area

One more local resident has died of COVID-19 as new cases in the tri-county area and across the state slowed significantly on Monday.

The latest fatality lived in Lake County and was identified by the Florida Department of Health on Monday as a 75-year-old man who tested positive Sept. 12. It was unclear from the report exactly where he lived in Lake County.

On Monday, the tri-county area reported just 20 new cases of COVID-19, while only 738 new patients were identified across the Sunshine State. That marks the lowest number of new cases across the state in several months.

Marion County is now reporting 9,713 cases – an increase of five from Sunday to Monday – among 3,916 men, 5,735 women, 17 non-residents and 45 people listed as unknown. A total of 998 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 2,224 in correctional facilities. There have been 288 deaths and 945 people treated in area hospitals.

Ocala continues to pace Marion County with 7,542 cases – an increase of two in a 24-hour period. Others have been identified in Summerfield (378), Belleview (356), Dunnellon (322), Citra (186), Silver Springs (137), Ocklawaha (116), Reddick (79), Anthony (66), Weirsdale (56), Fort McCoy (52), Flemington (33), Orange Lake (12), Sparr (8), McIntosh (8), Candler (7), Salt Springs (7), Lowell (5), The Villages (5), East Lake (3), Morriston (3), Orange Springs (2) and Fairfield (2). A total of 1,419 cases have been reported among inmates (1,318) and staff members (101) at Lowell Correctional Institution and Marion Correctional Institution.

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 2,228 – increase of six
  • Men: 1,159
  • Women: 1,047
  • Non-residents: 9
  • People listed as unknown: 13
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 198
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 483
  • Deaths: 67
  • Hospitalizations: 250
  • Area/cities with most cases: The Villages (588), Wildwood (406), Coleman (394), Bushnell (299, 138 of which are at the Sumter Correctional Institution among 103 inmates and 35 staff members) and Oxford (132). The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting 313 cases among 206 inmates and 107 staff members.

All told, Florida is reporting 701,302 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 738 from Sunday to Monday. Of those, 692,962 are residents. A total of 46,440 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 22,721 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 14,207 deaths and 43,606 people have been hospitalized.
