Belleview man jailed after violent battle with woman over missing surveillance camera

Gilbert Edward Lewis

A Belleview man was jailed Thursday after a nasty tiff with a woman who asked him about her missing surveillance camera.

The victim told Marion County sheriff’s deputies that she went to speak with 53-year-old Gilbert Edward Lewis, who she allowed to live with her while he was out on bond and needed a place to stay. She said he denied knowing anything about the missing camera equipment, started arguing with her and shoved her to the ground, a Belleview Police report states, adding that she said she was afraid for Lewis to return to her residence.

A second victim reported intervening in the confrontation in an attempt to calm Lewis down. He said Lewis also shoved him, causing his back to slam into a wall inside the residence, the report says.

Lewis was then placed under arrest. He claimed that the woman had hit him first and he wanted to press charges against her, the report says.

Lewis was charged with domestic battery and battery on a person 65 years of age or older. He was being held on no bond on the domestic battery charge and $2,000 bond on the other charge and is due in court Nov. 10 at 9 a.m., jail records show.
