2 more local COVID-19 deaths as Florida sees spike and tops 750,000 cases

Two more local residents have succumbed to COVID-19 as Florida experienced yet another spike in cases and the total number of positive results soared past 750,000.

Both of the latest fatalities were residents of Lake County. No specific information about them was provided Saturday by the Florida Department of Health.

Marion County is now reporting 10,416 cases – an increase of 71 from Friday to Saturday – among 4,248 men, 6,141 women, 20 non-residents and seven people listed as unknown. A total of 1,050 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 2,236 in correctional facilities. There have been 334 deaths and 1,030 people treated in area hospitals.

The overwhelming majority of Marion County cases – 7,964 – have been reported in Ocala, which saw an increase of 47 in a 24-hour period. Others have been identified in Summerfield (426), Belleview (377), Dunnellon (355), Citra (193), Silver Springs (160), Ocklawaha (133), Reddick (82), Weirsdale (75), Anthony (71), Fort McCoy (60), Flemington (33), Orange Lake (12), Salt Springs (11), Sparr (8), McIntosh (8), Candler (7), The Villages (6), Lowell (5), Morriston (5), East Lake (4), Orange Springs (2) and Fairfield (2). A total of 1,421 cases have been reported among inmates (1,318) and staff members (103) at Lowell Correctional Institution and Marion Correctional Institution.

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 2,742 – increase of 11
  • Men: 1,556
  • Women: 1,165
  • Non-residents: 10
  • People listed as unknown: 11
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 205
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 738
  • Deaths: 79
  • Hospitalizations: 270
  • Area/cities with most cases: The Villages (712), Coleman (656), Wildwood (449), Bushnell (323, 140 of which are at the Sumter Correctional Institution among 103 inmates and 37 staff members) and Oxford (139). The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting 167 cases among 64 inmates and 103 staff members.

All told, Florida is reporting 752,481 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 4,044 from Friday to Saturday. Of those, 743,018 are residents. A total of 49,306 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 23,660 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 16,118 deaths and 46,976 people have been hospitalized.
