Marion sheriff seeks help in nabbing thief who stole jet ski and trailer

Kevin Smith

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a jet ski bandit.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods is asking for help in locating 38-year-old Kevin Smith, who is accused of stealing the jet ski and its trailer from behind a vehicle at a local Publix parking lot. The victim apparently had parked to run inside the store and when he returned, the jet ski and its trailer were missing.

Woods offered a message for Smith and others who steal during his weekly “Wanted by Woods Wednesday” segment on his agency’s Facebook page.

“Get off your butts, get a job, be a productive member of society and buy these things for yourself,” Woods said. “I say this because you, Kevin, are not a productive member of society. You are a thief. You need to be off my streets and put in my jail. I’m done with people like you stealing from my citizens.”

Woods said Smith may be in either Marion County or Citrus County and asked residents to be on the lookout for him. Anyone with information about the crime or Smith is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Marion County at 352-368-STOP (7867) and reference 20-74 in your tip. If you use Crime Stoppers and your tip leads to an arrest, you could be eligible for a cash reward.
