A Belleview man who caused a disturbance at a home while looking for his phone was arrested on a DUI charge recently.
A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of a verbal altercation at a residence on SE 59th Avenue. The resident said a Hispanic man had walked up to his driveway yelling that his phone was at the location and was driving back to the residence, according to the sheriff’s office report.
A red Ford Escape pulled up next to the patrol car and teh deputy spoke with the driver and sole occupant, John Jairo Calle, 62, of 4900 SE 102nd Place, Lot 110. Calle said he lost his cell phone and it was pinging at the residence. The deputy could smell alcohol on Calle’s breath, but he said he did not drink any alcohol. Calle said he did take prescribed painkiller medication with a warning not to consume and operate a motor vehicle, the report said.
Calle agreed to participate in a series of field sobriety exercises. He lost his balance multiple times in the walk-and-turn exercise and couldn’t keep his leg up in the one-legged stand. Calle recited the alphabet incorrectly multiple times and swayed while trying, according to the report.
In the finger-to-nose exercise, Calle missed his nose and touched the left side of his face. He showed all six signs of horizontal gaze nystagmus. Calle was determined to be impaired and placed under arrest. He provided breath samples that were tested and came back with readings of .135 and .131, the report said.
Calle was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was being held on $500 bond. He was released Saturday on $500 bond and will appear in Marion County Court on Jan. 6.
