Ocala woman nabbed after scratched-up juvenile daughter calls for help

Laura Patricia Barragan

An Ocala woman found herself behind bars Monday night after her scratched-up juvenile daughter claimed she was attacked.

The victim told Marion County sheriff’s deputies that the physical altercation took place after her mother, 29-year-old Laura Patricia Barragan, attempted to leave their residence with someone whose name was redacted from a report about the incident. She said Barragan “raised an open hand” toward her, leading her to believe she was going to be struck, the report says.

The victim said she attempted to stop Barragan and that’s when she started hitting her, causing injury to her neck. Deputies observed several scratch marks on the girl’s neck consistent with the statements she had made to them, according to the report.

After being read her rights, Barragan admitted that she was involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical after she called her daughter a derogatory name twice. She claimed the victim struck her on the nose, though deputies didn’t observe any injuries on Barragan’s face, the report says.

After a witness confirmed the victim’s story about the altercation, Barragan, who originally is from Los Angeles, was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail, where she was charged with child abuse without great bodily harm. She was being held on $1,000 bond and is due in court Nov. 24 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charge, jail records show.
