Ocala woman popped for DUI while speeding on Maricamp Road

Emily Gilson

A 22-year-old Ocala woman was charged with DUI after being stopped for speeding early Sunday.

Shortly before 2 a.m., a Marion County sheriff’s deputy sitting stationary around the 5200 block of Maricamp Road saw a red Volkswagen that appeared to be speeding. Radar confirmed the vehicle was traveling 76 mph in a 50-mph zone, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The deputy followed the vehicle to the intersection of Maricamp Road and SE 58th Avenue, where the vehicle had trouble stopping for a red light. Once the light turned green, the vehicle accelerated rapidly. The deputy initiated a traffic stop in the 5900 block of Maricamp Road and spoke with the victim, Emily Faith Gilson, of 1027 NE 17th Ave.

Gilson provided her driver’s license but struggled to find her registration and insurance. She asked multiple times what was needed as she shuffled through her paperwork. The deputy observed a glass cup with a back straw in the center console that appeared and was later confirmed to be alcohol. Gilson’s eyes were bloodshot and the deputy detected an odor of alcohol on her breath, the report said.

Asked if she had any drinks, Gilson said she had two. She agreed to a series of field sobriety exercises. After failing the horizontal gaze nystagmus exercise, Gilson quit the walk-and-turn exercise and told the deputy to just take her to jail. Before she could be arrested, Gilson walked back to her car and started speaking on her phone. The deputy held her by one arm and convinced her to get out of the vehicle, and she complied after several minutes, she complied, according to the report.

Gilson was taken to the Marion County Jail, where she refused to provide a breath sample or testing. She was released later Sunday on $1,000 bond. No court information was available.
