5 new COVID-19 deaths as Marion County reports significant spike in cases

Five more local residents have succumbed to COVID-19 as Marion County reported a significant increase in new cases Tuesday.

Four of the latest fatalities were residents of Marion County and the fifth one lived in Sumter County. They were identified by the Florida Department of Health as:

  • 72-year-old Marion County man who tested positive Sept. 6;
  • 91-year-old Marion County man who tested positive Sept. 18;
  • 97-year-old Marion County woman tested positive Oct. 29;
  • 94-year-old Marion County man who tested positive Nov. 12; and
  • 74-year-old Sumter County man who tested positive Nov. 12.

Marion County is now reporting 11,871 cases – an increase of 93 from Monday to Tuesday – among 4,891 men, 6,936 women, 33 non-residents and 11 people listed as unknown. A total of 1,158 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 2,257 in correctional facilities. There have been 368 deaths and 1,126 people treated in area hospitals.

Ocala continues to lead Marion County with 8,906 cases – an increase of 56 in a 24-hour period. Others have been identified in Summerfield (496), Belleview (434), Dunnellon (430), Citra (205), Silver Springs (185), Ocklawaha (148), Reddick (93), Weirsdale (84), Anthony (81), Fort McCoy (79), Flemington (33), Salt Springs (23), Orange Lake (12), The Villages (10), Sparr (9), McIntosh (9), Candler (9), Lowell (7), Morriston (5), East Lake (5), Orange Springs (2) and Fairfield (1). A total of 1,427 cases have been reported among inmates (1,318) and staff members (109) at Lowell Correctional Institution and Marion Correctional Institution.

  • Cases: 24,776 – increase of 169

  • Cases: 9,721 – increase of 56

  • Deaths: 243
  • Hospitalizations: 789
  • Cities with most cases: Clermont (2,473), Leesburg (1,569), Tavares (845), Eustis (790) and Mount Dora (729).

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 3,184 – increase of 20
  • Men: 1,796
  • Women: 1,353
  • Non-residents: 18
  • People listed as unknown: 17
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 226
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 798
  • Deaths: 90
  • Hospitalizations: 307
  • Area/cities with most cases: The Villages (880), Coleman (711), Wildwood (483), Bushnell (364, 154 of which are at the Sumter Correctional Institution among 106 inmates and 48 staff members) and Oxford (152). The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting 113 cases among four inmates and 109 staff members.

All told, Florida is reporting 897,323 cases – an increase of 7,459 from Monday to Tuesday. Of those, 884,625 are residents. A total of 53,944 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 25,264 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 17,861 deaths and 52,329 people have been hospitalized.
