United Way recruiting volunteers to take part in free income tax assistance program

The United Way of Marion County is looking for volunteers who are interested in preparing income taxes for free.

No experience is necessary and free certification is provided by IRS certified instructors for those who want to participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Certified volunteers will provide free income tax assistance to Marion County residents at VITA sites located in Ocala and surrounding areas in Marion County.

Certified VITA volunteers provided 1,944 tax returns to Marion County residents at no cost this year, resulting in more than $3 million in total refunds. The program saved residents an estimated $251,000 in filing fees, while also keeping those dollars in the local community.

Informational sessions will be held at the Marion County Literacy Council, located at 120 SW 5th St. in Ocala, on Monday, Nov. 30 from 10-11 a.m. and again from 6-7 p.m. For more information or to register, contact Doug MacPhail at (352) 355-1225 or dmacphail@uwmc.org.
