Deadly COVID-19 cases nearing 1 million mark in Florida

COVID-19 is showing no signs of slowing down in the tri-county area and across the state as Florida is nearing 1 million cumulative cases of the deadly virus.

As of Sunday, the Sunshine State was reporting 992,660 cases – an increase of 7,363 from Saturday to Sunday. Of those, 976,944 are residents. A total of 56,211 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 25,686 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 18,736 deaths and 54,706 people have been hospitalized.

Locally, Marion County is reporting 12,981 cases – an increase of 44 from Saturday to Sunday – among 5,366 men, 7,561 women, 39 non-residents and 15 people listed as unknown. A total of 1,204 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 2,268 in correctional facilities. There have been 379 deaths and 1,166 people treated in area hospitals.

Ocala continues to lead Marion County with 10,094 cases – an increase of 25 in a 24-hour period. Others have been identified in Summerfield (582), Dunnellon (515), Belleview (499), Citra (226), Silver Springs (220), Ocklawaha (179), Reddick (116), Fort McCoy (102), Weirsdale (92), Anthony (92), The Villages (58), Flemington (33), Salt Springs (23), Orange Lake (13), Candler (12), Sparr (10), McIntosh (9), Lowell (7), Morriston (5), East Lake (5), Orange Springs (2) and Fairfield (1). A total of 1,432 cases have been reported among inmates (1,318) and staff members (114) at Lowell Correctional Institution and Marion Correctional Institution.

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 3,442 – increase of 14
  • Men: 1,931
  • Women: 1,473
  • Non-residents: 19
  • People listed as unknown: 19
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 226
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 803
  • Deaths: 95
  • Hospitalizations: 319
  • Area/cities with most cases: The Villages (1,117), Coleman (718), Wildwood (531), Bushnell (432, 158 of which are at the Sumter Correctional Institution among 107 inmates and 51 staff members) and Oxford (177). The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting 119 cases among 12 inmates and 107 staff members.
