Scooter-driving Ocala man popped for DUI while fleeing scene of battery

Mark Dylan Sosa

An Ocala man was charged with DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia after being pulled over on a motorized scooter while fleeing the scene of an alleged domestic battery.

On Dec. 10, a Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded a domestic disturbance. The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Mark Dylan Sosa, who reportedly had left the location on a gray motorized scooter, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Another deputy located the scooter and followed it until more units arrived. While following it, the deputy observed the scooter had a broken left brake light and was weaving within its lane. It then ran the stop sign at SE 52nd Street and SE 44th Avenue Road, the report said.

A traffic stop was conducted at SE 52nd Street and SE 39th Court for the traffic violations. Upon being stopped, Sosa started digging into his pickets and was trying to pull out a wood grinder. A field test of the grinder came back positive for the presence of THC. Sosa said his father gave him the grinder before he left his residence, according to the report.

During the conversation, the deputy observed Sosa had watery, bloodshot eyes and could smell the strong odor of alcohol on his breath. His speech was mumbled and his face was flushed. Sosa was arrested on the paraphernalia charge and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he failed a series of field sobriety tests. He also provided breath samples that provided BAC readings of .203 and .211, the report said.

Meanwhile, back at Sosa’s residence, the victim told a deputy Sosa came home after being out drinking. The victim said he told Sosa to go to his (Sosa’s) room to avoid any confrontation due to Sosa being intoxicated, according to the report.

The victim said he went to his own bedroom to stay away from Sosa. He said Sosa then entered his room and threatened him. He said he was afraid Sosa was going to hurt him, so he called 911. The victim said Sosa struck him on the back of his head while he was on the phone with the 911 operator. He said Sosa realized after he struck him in the head that he was on the phone with 911 and left on the scooter, the report said.

Asked at the jail what happened between him and the victim, Sosa said he did not hit the victim and that the victim hit him in the back of the head. The deputy didn’t see any injuries on Sosa. Due to the fact the victim was on a recorded line at the time the incident occurred, Sosa was also charged with simple domestic battery, according to the report.

Sosa was still being held as of Friday on $3,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Marion County Jail on Feb. 9, 2021.
