2 more local COVID-19 deaths as deadly virus spikes across Marion County

Two more local residents have lost their battle with COVID-19 as new cases across the tri-county area skyrocketed Tuesday.

One of the local fatalities was a resident of Marion County and the other one lived in Sumter County. They are among the 839 fatalities in the tri-county area, the 21,052 deaths in Florida and the 321,698 across the country.

Locally, Marion County is reporting 16,297 cases – an increase of 207 in a 24-hour period. There have been 437 deaths and 1,277 people have been hospitalized.

Ocala continues to lead Marion County with 12,315 cases – an increase of 127 overnight. Others have been identified in Summerfield (903), Dunnellon (689), Belleview (641), Citra (282), Silver Springs (281), Ocklawaha (243), Reddick (143), Fort McCoy (136), Anthony (122), Weirsdale (112), The Villages (58), Flemington (34), Salt Springs (27), McIntosh (15), Candler (14), Orange Lake (13), Sparr (12), Lowell (8), Morriston (6), East Lake (5), Orange Springs (4) and Fairfield (4).

TRI-COUNTY AREA

  • Cases: 34,694 – increase of 485
  • Deaths: 839
  • Hospitalizations: 2,601

LAKE COUNTY

  • Cases: 13,863 – increase of 165
  • Deaths: 286
  • Hospitalizations: 958
  • Cities with most cases: Clermont (3,681), Leesburg (2,191), Eustis (1,114), Tavares (1,079) and Mount Dora (1,077).

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 4,534 – increase of 113
  • Deaths: 116
  • Hospitalizations: 366
  • Areas/cities with most cases: The Villages (1,789), Coleman (729), Wildwood (625), Bushnell (506) and Oxford (253).

All told, Florida is reporting 1,223,015 cases – an increase of 10,434 from Monday to Tuesday. Of those, 1,202,660 are residents. A total of 62,151 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 26,872 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 21,052 deaths and 60,471 people have been hospitalized.
