Umatilla woman charged with DUI after drinking at Big Scrub

Lisa M. Waugh

An Umatilla woman was arrested on a DUI charge Monday night after drinking at a bar near the Big Scrub Campground in the Ocala National Forest.

At around 9 p.m., a Marion County sheriff’s deputy saw a 2002 white Buick traveling south on 202nd Terrace come to a stop at the stop sign at 182nd Avenue Road. As the vehicle turned south onto 182nd Avenue Road, it turned with a wide radius and its two passenger-side tires went off the road, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The vehicle drove past the deputy, who turned around and followed it to conduct a traffic stop. While the deputy was behind the Buick, the vehicle drifted from side to side in the lane and crossed over the white fog lane. It also did not have any working tag lights, the report said.

The deputy conducted the traffic stop and spoke with the driver, 57-year-old Lisa M. Waugh of 15351 SE 182nd Ave. Road. Waugh’s eyes were bloodshot and watery, her speech was slurred and there was an odor of alcohol on her breath. Asked where she was coming from, Waugh said she was returning home from the bar in Big Scrub, where she had consumed alcohol, according to the report.

Waugh struggled during a series of field sobriety tests, spontaneously saying to the deputy at one point that she may have had one too many drinks. She was placed under arrest and taken to the Marion County Jail, where the results of a breath-alcohol test were .147 and .139 grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath, which is above the legal limit, the report said.

Waugh was released Tuesday on $1,000 bond and will appear in Marion County Court on March 17.
