An Ocala woman was jailed recently after she sped away from a Marion County sheriff’s deputy with his emergency lights and siren activated and then crashed in a local business.
The sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a white Nissan Sentra at the intersection of N. Pine Avenue and N.W. 10th Street after running the vehicle’s license tag and discovering that it had been expired for more than six months. But the driver, later identified as 44-year-old Olivia Latrice Mason, immediately drove through the parking lot of a U-Haul business and headed east at a high rate of speed, a sheriff’s office report states.
The deputy terminated the pursuit based on the speed Mason’s vehicle was traveling. But a short time later he saw her vehicle roll over onto its hood in a parking lot after slamming into Stokes Electric on Magnolia Avenue, the report says.
Mason climbed from her crashed vehicle and was taken into custody. She admitted that he had been driving the vehicle and saw the deputy’s emergency lights but said she didn’t stop because she was “scared” and her passenger told her not to, according to the report.
The deputy ran a computer check and discovered that Mason had previous suspensions on her driver’s license. She also admitted that her license was currently suspended, the report says.
Mason was transported to the Marion County Jail and charged with fleeing/eluding and driving while license suspended or revoked. She was released that same night on $2,500 bond and her next court date hasn’t yet been set, jail records show.
