Convicted felon jailed on weapons charge after claiming men were outside his bedroom

Daniel Frederick Brendel

A Fort McCoy man was jailed recently after he claimed two men were standing outside his bedroom.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies checked the area and didn’t find any signs of a break-in or suspicious activity. Deputies then initiated a Baker Act evaluation for 36-year-old Daniel Frederick Brendel after he placed multiple calls for service for the same matter and unusual behavior.

During the evaluation, Brendel failed to answer the questions and a sheriff’s sergeant observed him to have dilated pupils consistent with methamphetamine use, a sheriff’s office report states. Based on information obtained during the evaluation and Brendel hallucinating, he was placed under a Baker Act and transported to The Centers.

Deputies searched Brendel’s residence and located a 9mm Luger bullet in his right back pocket. After being read his rights, he claimed he found the bullet while cleaning his kitchen and put it in his back pocket, according to the report.

A criminal history check revealed Brendel was found guilty of possession of methamphetamine last year and adjudicated guilty for dealing in stolen property in 2013. He was then placed under arrest and charged with possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon and probation violations for past charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance. He was being held on $5,000 bond on the new charge and no bond on the previous charges and is due in Marion County Court on April 27 and May 5, jail records show.
