An Ocala man was arrested after a woman reported her pregnant niece had black-and-blue marks on her face.
The woman told Marion County sheriff’s deputies that she was coming home to pick up her niece because she had received a phone call stating that 26-year-old Jumanne S. Evins had been physically fighting with her all night. She said she saw Evins pushing her niece so she picked up a knife for protection. She said she told Evins to leave and he put his hands up but continued to be verbal with her, a sheriff’s office report states.
The victim, who had “noticeable swelling” on her left cheekbone and abrasions and scratch marks on her neck, said she didn’t want anyone to “get in trouble.” She said she and Evins had been drinking and they started arguing and it eventually became physical, the report says.
Deputies then made contact with Evins, who was “slightly bleeding” from his mouth, which he claimed happened because he fell down. He would neither confirm nor deny any altercation taking place, according to the report.
Evins, who lives S.W. 40th St. in Ocala, was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant victim. He was released on his own recognizance and is due in court May 4 at 9 a.m., jail records show.
