A seat belt-less 34-year-old Silver Springs man who once was convicted of kidnapping was arrested recently after a Marion County sheriff’s deputy who knew he didn’t have a valid driver’s license spotted him speeding on Hwy. 314A.

The deputy confirmed that Andrew Lee Murphy was traveling at 65 mph in a 55-mph speed zone and followed him onto a dirt road. Murphy stopped his silver Ford sedan in the 17300 block of N.E. 38th Lane Road and was detained in handcuffs in the back of the deputy’s patrol vehicle, a sheriff’s office report states.

A computer check confirmed that Murphy’s license was suspended due to failure to pay court obligations and being classified as a habitual traffic violator. Several other suspensions were noted, the report says.

The computer check also revealed that Murphy was convicted in January 2013 on charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, felony fleeing and eluding law enforcement, the report says.

Murphy told the deputy that he attempted to flee at first but then decided to stop once he noticed the deputy was attempting to stop him. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with driving while license suspended (habitual offender). He was later released on $3,000 bond and is due in court May 4 at 9 a.m., jail records show.
