An Ocala man found himself behind bars recently after he was stopped by a Marion County sheriff’s deputy because the lettering on his license plate was obstructed.

The deputy made contact with the driver of the silver Kia Optima, 53-year-old Samuel Alvin Brown, who admitted that his Florida driver’s license was suspended. The deputy ran a background check on Brown’s license, which revealed multiple suspensions and cancellations dating back to May 2010, as well as two convictions for driving while license suspended, a sheriff’s office report states.

Brown was taken into custody and during a search of his vehicle, a sheriff’s deputy located a container holding a clear baggie with a rock-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. The deputy also located four packets of 8mg Suboxone film, the report says.

After being read his rights, Brown denied knowledge of what was inside the container. He was then transported to the Marion County Jail and charged with driving with license suspended or revoked (third or subsequent violation) and two counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He was being held on $6,000 bond and is due in court May 18 at 9 a.m., jail records show.
