Marion County sheriff’s deputies responding to a report of an aggravated assault in a vehicle ended up arresting the driver on drug charges.

Johnathan Caban, 20, of 134 Pecan Drive, was charged with two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He was the driver and registered owner of the 2019 Honda Accord being driven during the assault, according to the sheriff’s office report.

All the people in the vehicle were detained during the traffic stop shortly before midnight April 17. The arresting deputy could smell the odor of fresh marijuana emitting from the vehicle as he approached it, the report said.

A search of the vehicle turned up four electronic cigarette cartridges containing a brown substance. Two of the cartridges were found in a compartment on the driver’s side door and two more were found in the pocket on the back of the passenger seat. The officer also found 10 individual packages of what appeared to be rope candy labeled, “Medicated Nerds Ropes,” on the driver’s side backseat floorboard, according to the report.

After being read his Miranda warning, Caban invoked his right not to speak with deputies. Field tests of all of the items confirmed the presence of THC content, the report said.

Caban was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he posted $4,000 bond and was released April 18. No court information was available.
