Two Dunnellon women were arrested on drug charges last week after being pulled over in Ocala for not wearing their seat belts.

Jessica D. Thompson, 44, was charged with possession of methamphetamine while Megan Marie Freeman, 33, was charged with possession of heroin. Thompson was the driver and Freeman was the front-seat passenger when a Marion County sheriff’s deputy saw they weren’t wearing seat belts Thursday at the intersection of NW 27th and 44th avenues, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The deputy conducted a traffic stop in the 6700 block of NW Highway 27. A K9 unit was brought in to conduct a free air sniff and the dog, “Rocky,” gave a positive alert for narcotics, the report said.

The deputy searched the vehicle. Inside Thompson’s purse, which was found on the driver’s side floorboard, was a small plastic bag containing a clear crystal substance and three syringes half-full of a red liquid. Before being told what was found inside her purse, she told the deputy some of its contents did not belong to her. Asked what didn’t belong to her, Thompson said needles and “ice,” a street term for methamphetamine, according to the report.

The substance from the baggie and both syringes tested positive for methamphetamine. Thompson was placed under arrest and Freeman was charged with possession of heroin, the report said.

Both women were taken to the Marion County Jail, where they were released early Saturday on $2,000 bond. Thompson and Freeman will appear in Marion County Court on June 1.
