Raccoon in Umatilla area tests positive for rabies

The Florida Department of Health in Marion County reported Umatilla-area residents need to be aware of a raccoon in their area that has tested positive for rabies.

People who live or work in the Umatilla area, particularly those who live south of Southeast 153rd Place, west of Southeast 265th Avenue, north of Southeast 173rd Lane and east of Southeast Highway 450, should maintain a heightened awareness that rabies is active in the area, according to Florida Health.

The health department reported if you have been bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal, seek medical attention and report the injury to the health department. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek immediate veterinary assistance for the animal, and contact your county’s Animal Services department.
