It has been just over a year since the city began permitting golf carts to travel across a collection of designated city streets in southeast Ocala.
Those streets, which are concentrated in southeast Ocala, are defined by the city golf cart map:
In other places across Ocala, including many age-restricted, active adult communities like On Top of the World, golf carts are permitted through streets within the community.
A developer for is asking the Marion County Commission to permit golf cart usage for his residents as part of his proposed development near Marion Oaks in southwest Ocala.
In The Villages, millions of dollars have been spent to create an intricate multi-modal golf cart network that allows for travel throughout the entire community. Cyclists, runners, and golf cart drivers all share these multi-modal paths.
Although a similar investment in Ocala might be astronomical given the structure of the city’s roadways, there may be areas around the city that would benefit from the use of golf carts on roadways.
Do you think there are any other places in the city of Ocala where you’d like to see the use of golf carts and other low-speed vehicles permitted? Share your thoughts in a letter to the editor.
