The Florida Department of Transportation is proposing improvements to enhance the safety of a well-trafficked intersection in Marion County.
FDOT will look to make changes to the intersection of Abshier Boulevard/U.S. 441 and SE Hames Road/S.R. 25 in order to enhance the safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
The proposed improvements for the intersection, which is in the City of Belleview, were developed during a 2019 intersection safety study. Those improvements include the addition of left turn lanes in each direction, with a raised traffic separator on SE Abshier Blvd, west of SE Hames Road.
That improvement will allow left turns from eastbound SE Abshier Blvd to northbound SE Hames Road, and from westbound SE Abshier Blvd to the Wawa driveway entrance.
Among other changes, the project will also look to replace the existing free-flow right turn lane from westbound SE Hames Road to northbound SE Abshier Blvd with a new right turn lane that will be controlled by the traffic signal.
Pedestrian and bicycle enhancements include upgrading pedestrian signals, realigning crosswalks, and adding a new sidewalk, among others.
According to the FDOT, the estimated design cost of the project is $450,000, with construction estimated to cost $1.2 million.
FDOT says the estimated completion of construction is next fall.
