U.S. Forest Service offering tips in light of increasing bear activity nationally

With bear activity picking up across the country according to the The U.S. Forest Service in Florida, the organization is offering guidance on what to do if someone encounters a bear.

Bears can be found resting in tress as well as the ground. The NFS reports bears will naturally avoid people but if a bear notices you, back up slowly toward a secure area and leave the bear a clear escape route.

If moving irritates the bear, stay calm and still while waiting for the bear to walk away.

If the bear seems to be more interested in items you’re holding, such as a backpack or food, drop it as a last resort and back away.

The NFS says that if all else fails and the bear does attack you, fight back as aggressively as you can. They recommended the use of sticks, rocks and, if all else fails, your bare hands to punch its eyes and nose.

This can stun the bear and cause it to back off or even scare it off.
