Marie Connell Keeney

Marie Connell Keeney, 92, of Ocala passed away on August 25, 2021. She was born on February 6, 1929, the daughter of Mary Agnes and Fred L. Connell of Stoughton, Massachusetts. She graduated from Stoughton High School and attended Bridgewater State Teachers College where she majored in education. She married James Keeney on November 4, 1948, and eventually moved to Ocala, where she taught at Wyomina Park Elementary School. She completed a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Florida in 1961, and became Supervisor of Elementary Schools in Marion County. She was devoted to early childhood education, and was instrumental in the development of the kindergarten program in Marion County schools, among many other accomplishments, including becoming Director of Elementary Education for Marion County. She retired from the school system in 1991. She loved traveling and playing bridge, and especially spending time with her grandchildren who adored her. She was also a faithful and active member of Blessed Trinity Church for many years.

Marie is survived by her children, Janice Keeney Meyer (George) and John Keeney; brother Charles Connell; grandchildren Zachary Keeney, Kaitlin Keeney, Mary Grace Meyer, Stephanie Meyer, James Meyer, and great-granddaughter Zara Keeney. She was preceded in death by her loving husband James; parents Agnes and Fred; brother Freddy, and sister Edna.

A funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Trinity Catholic church on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at 10:00. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 to 10:00. Burial will follow at Anthony Cemetery.
