Marion County Schools report decline in positive COVID-19 cases, quarantines

Marion County Schools reported fewer positive COVID-19 cases and quarantines during the last week of school, continuing a downward trend since a spike at the beginning of the school year.

According to the most recent COVID-19 report from Marion County Public Schools, from Saturday, September 18 to Friday, September 24, nearly 50 schools and departments reported 157 positive COVID-19 cases among students and employees.

The 157 cases represents the lowest reported total this school year.

The report also shows a large decrease in the number of individuals who were quarantined. Last week, 582 students and employees were quarantined. The week before, nearly 1,000 students and district employees were quarantined.

The decrease in quarantines follows an order from the Florida Department of Health issued last week that grants parents discretion in quarantining child students who have been exposed to COVID-19.

Currently, 9,424 students have opted out of wearing face coverings. That represents about 22% of students.

At least 25 of the 48 schools and departments that reported positive cases last week were elementary schools, according to the report.
