Seminole tribe constructs authentic Chickee at Fort King National Historic Landmark

In partnership with the City of Ocala Recreation and Parks department, the Seminole Tribe of Florida has constructed a new, authentic Chickee at the Fort King National Historic Landmark.

A Chickee is a thatched-roof shelter with open sides that originated within the Seminole tribe. Construction of the Chickee was completed earlier this month.

The 20×40 foot structure will be used as an outdoor classroom and for multiple events, including the Festival at Fort King.

To view the Chickee, visit the Fort King National Historic Landmark and Visitors’ Center located at 3925 E Fort King Street, in Ocala.

The park is free and open to the public.
