Ocala man already serving life sentence pleads guilty to manslaughter by fentanyl overdose

An Ocala man already serving a life sentence in prison after he was convicted of sexual battery has pled guilty to distributing fentanyl that resulted in the overdose death of a woman in 2017.

According to a press release from the Florida State Attorney’s Fifth Judicial Circuit, 51-year-old David Long was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter last month.

Over four years ago on October 7, 2017, a 28-year-old female overdosed on drugs and was transported to the hospital for treatment. She was unconscious at the time and later died.

Ocala Police Department detectives were able to trace the female’s call history and find Long’s cellphone number. During an interview, Long told officers that the female had been there and had suffered a panic attack. When inside the home, OPD officers found guns and drugs and eventually determined that the drugs that killed the female came from Long.

On September 20, 2021 Long pled guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Long was previously sentenced to life in prison after he was found guilty at trial for the 2017 armed sexual battery of a Marion County woman.

Both cases were prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Amy Berndt.
