Fort McCoy man arrested in connection to fatal motorcycle accident

A Fort McCoy man has been arrested in connection to a fatal motorcycle accident that claimed the life of a woman in May.

According to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol, Steven Timothy Cano, 45, was identified as the driver and owner of a motorcycle that was involved in a fatal accident that occurred on May 16 in Marion County. The location of the accident was on NE 127 Street Road, one-tenth of a mile west of NE 230 Avenue.

According to FHP, the accident occurred when Cano and an unidentified 57-year-old female passenger were traveling westbound on NE 127 Street Road, and Cano failed to properly navigate a left curve.

The motorcycle veered off the roadway to the right and entered the north grass shoulder. The front of the motorcycle struck some foliage and overturned.

During the overturning, Cano and the female passenger were both thrown off the motorcycle. Cano fled the scene without leaving any information, and he failed to report the crash.

The unidentified female passenger was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Marion County Jail records show that Cano was arrested earlier this morning and is currently being held on $12,000 bond. He faces numerous felony charges.

No court date has been scheduled yet, according to jail records.
