Marion County homeschooler receives National Merit Scholar honor

A Marion County student that switched over to homeschooling was recognized as a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist.

Faith Broersma joins five other Ocala high school seniors who were recently honored by the National Merit Scholarship program.

Broersma attended Dr. NH Jones and Forest High School and decided to make the switch to homeschooling to complete her Associate of Arts at the College of Central Florida before completing high school.

She plans to attend the University of Florida and has aspirations to attend Yale University for a PhD in Neuropsychology.

In total, six Ocala high school seniors have been selected as semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship, which provides college scholarships to high school seniors through a competitive testing and scoring process.

According to a press release from Marion County Public Schools, over 1.5 million students are eligible for the scholarship nationwide and around 16,000 students are selected as semifinalists.
