School board approves funding for Kingdom of the Sun Basketball Tournament

The school board has approved funding for a popular upcoming high school basketball tournament.

During last night’s Marion County School Board meeting, the board members approved, as a consent agenda item, $4,000 in funding for the Kingdom of the Sun Basketball Tournament at Vanguard High School.

As with other meetings, consent agenda items are voted upon with one vote, and are not individually discussed.

This year’s tournament spans four days and features a 28-game tiered playoff.

The tournament will feature teams from all over Florida and the United States, including Maine, Illinois, New Jersey, and Georgia.

The four-day event is expected to generate attendance of over 5,000 people, with a minimum hotel room occupancy around the area of at least 300.

A one-time payment will be made to Vanguard High School as reimbursement for eligible expenses and verified hotel bookings. This amount is not to exceed $4,000.

Vanguard High School will provide the county’s Tourist Development Council with a verified proof of the number of hotel rooms booked along with other eligible expenses within 60 calendar days after the tournament.
