Ocala Police Department seeking approval for $125,000 purchase of wireless routers

The Ocala Police Department is seeking approval from the city council for the purchase of new wireless routers.

Over the past several years, the Ocala Police Department has expanded the number of devices in their vehicles. They are looking to reduce the number of devices that use air cards, and instead move towards use of a cellular router.

This change of equipment is expected to reduce costs in the upcoming years by eliminating the need for a cellular modem and reducing the number of cellular phone lines that OPD needs.

OPD will begin to receive data on the vehicles that are outfitted with the updated equipment to better help with fleet management, which in turn is expected to increase OPD’s operational efficiency.

The matter of approval for this purchase will go before the Ocala City Council members during their regular meeting on Tuesday, November 16.

If approved by the council, the purchase would be authorized in the amount of nearly $125,000 for the new routers. After one year, there would be an ongoing support contract fee of over $10,000 plus any cost increases.

The Ocala City Council meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at Ocala City Hall (110 SE Watula Avenue).
