As the holiday season begins, a safety campaign is being launched to help ensure that all travelers remain safe on Florida’s roads.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) is launching their Safe Holiday Travel campaign which looks to ensure that all drivers and passengers ‘arrive alive’ at their destinations.
Due to the holidays, millions of Floridians and visitors are expected to hit the state’s roadways over the next several months.
During this safety campaign that spans November and December, FLHSMV will be educating state residents and visitors on all aspects of safe driving.
The first focus is on having a road-ready vehicle. Tires are a vehicle’s first line of defense on the road, and FLHSMV stresses the importance of checking tires before driving.
According to FLHSMV, there were over 3,000 tire-related crashes in Florida in 2020, resulting in 184 serious injuries and 61 deaths.
Last year, in November and December alone, there were over 1,000 crashes involving alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both. There were also nearly 5,500 DUI citations issued across the state during those two months.
