A 36-year-old Umatilla man was arrested after allegedly punching a patient and staff members at an Ocala mental health facility.
On Tuesday, November 16 at around 8 a.m., a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to SMA Healthcare located at 5664 SW 60th Avenue in Ocala in reference to a physical altercation involving a patient and staff members.
When the deputy arrived, Brandon Logan Ellison was already detained by staff.
A behavioral technician at SMA stated that Ellison was staying at the facility and had requested to see a social worker in order to leave.
According to the MCSO report, the technician told Ellison that no social worker was currently available. Ellison then allegedly grabbed an item off a nearby desk, threw it behind the technician, and the object knocked a fan off the wall.
When the technician turned around toward the fan, Ellison was observed punching another male patient.
The technician, along with a nearby nurse’s assistant, rushed over to intervene, and both stated that they were also struck by Ellison. Both employees told MCSO that they do not want to pursue any charges against him.
The male patient had a laceration under his left eye and was transported to West Marion Community Hospital.
Ellison told the deputy that he was a voluntary patient at SMA and the facility was not letting him leave.
He was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail where he is currently being held on $5,000 bond.
Ellison faces a felony battery charge and has an upcoming court date on December 21 at 9 a.m., according to jail records.
