Electric company offers holiday tips to lower energy consumption

With the holiday season underway, energy consumption can increase due to family gatherings with home-cooked meals or holiday lights.

Ocala Electric Utility has provided the following tips to help reduce energy consumption and optimize energy efficiency during the winter.

According to OEU, changing the temperature from 72 degrees to 68 degrees can result in an energy savings of 10%.

To help conserve heat, drapes and blinds can be opened during the day to let the sunlight and heat in, and then they can be closed during the night.

Unwanted drafts can be kept out by sealing switches and outlets. Weather stripping can also be added around doors and windows.

Filling any gaps or cracks with caulk and foam will improve home insulation.

A switch to LED lights can result in using up to 70% less energy, and LED bulbs last ten times longer than traditional light bulbs.
