A pickup truck struck and killed a bicyclist in southwest Ocala earlier this morning.
At around 6 a.m., the Florida Highway Patrol reported a fatal accident involving a bicyclist on State Road 200, east of SW 90th Street.
According to the FHP incident report, a 23-year-old Ocala man was heading east on State Road 200 in a pickup truck. He was in the right lane.
A 57-year-old Citrus Springs man was traveling east on a bicycle within the designated bicycle lane that runs along the right lane of State Road 200.
The pickup truck drifted outside of the lane to the right, entered the bicycle lane, and struck the rear of the bicycle.
Marion County Fire Rescue arrived on the scene and pronounced the bicyclist deceased.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
The names of those involved in the accident were not released, per FHP policy.
Earlier this week, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced an enforcement detail in four county locations, including one that is close to this accident site, in an effort to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
